On Monday, the Year 6 pupils from Penwortham Primary School came to join us for a Science lesson.
As they had been studying classification in their lessons we provided them with some activities to extend their knowledge and curiosity in this area in line with British Science Week.
The class confidently recalled all of the work they had covered in class, including how to classify different types of species using the Linnaean system of hierarchy.
We looked together at some animal skulls in the department and attempted to classify them using prior knowledge of animals - with some spirited discussion of whether one particular skull was a goat or a ram!
The pupils then had a masterclass in using microscopes and set off to do some more work on classification. After successfully focussing the microscopes they went around in a carousel and classified each of the samples on the cells as either animal or plant cell.
Assistant Head of Science, Mrs Potter, said, “The pupils worked with great enthusiasm and we look forward to welcoming them in again.”
