Pupils from across the school came together for an exciting afternoon of strategy and competition at this year’s Priory chess tournament, organised by Mrs Swire, who leads the weekly lunchtime chess club.

A dedicated group of players from Year 7 through to Year 11 took part, demonstrating impressive skill, concentration and determination. The tournament was held on the afternoon of Thursday 30 April, with competitors battling their way through a series of closely fought matches.

The camaraderie and supportive spirit on display were a delight to see, with pupils encouraging one another throughout while enjoying a juice and a biscuit - or two! The positive atmosphere truly reflected the inclusive nature of the chess club.

Such was the level of competition that the tournament overran, meaning the final stages had to be completed during a lunchtime session the following week (8 May). With the Year 11 competitors about to embark on their final exams, the competition was brought forward, making it a special end-of-year event for those involved.

After several intense rounds, four finalists were selected. The final proved especially memorable, featuring a head-to-head battle between the two Alexes. In a tense and closely contested match, the Year 8 Alex P emerged victorious, earning the title of Priory Chess Champion.
His name will now be added to the school trophy. Alex W was our runner-up, with Archie H and ? in third and fourth place respectively.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a special thank you to Mrs Swire for organising such an enjoyable and successful event.

Chess Club runs every Thursday lunchtime in Hex 3 and is open to pupils of all abilities from all year groups; new players are always welcome.
